Atlantic City casinos may light up a while longer

Major casino operators like Donald Trump has warned that declaring the city's casinos smoke-free could mean a further decline in casino revenues. This would of course also affect revenue of the Atlantic City Council and the loss of a substantial number of jobs. As it is the deepening economic crises in the US is already taking its toll on the casino industry.

Mayor Scott Evans has said that he would leave the decision on whether to delay the smoking ban to the council although he expressed concern that casino workers would be exposed to the risks of secondhand smoke. The city's casinos represent around 80 percent of city's taxes as well as being a major provider of jobs.

The casino industry has already seen a drop of 5.2 percent in it its revenue and fear that a smoking ban will cause a further 5 percent decline. They say that smokers will take their custom to Pennsylvania and other casino markets that allow them to light up. Donald Trump warned that a smoking ban will negatively impact the casinos in Atlantic City beyond any competition and has asked council to reconsider a complete smoking ban until there is an upturn in the economy.

Millions of dollars in state casino-tax revenues could be lost and this will impact social programs for New Jersey's senior and disabled residents, Trump said at the opening of the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort's hotel tower. Mayor Evans agrees with Trump and said that his concern is legitimate. Mark Juliano, CEO of Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc and operator of the three Trump casinos said that the gaming industry is unified in its belief that a complete smoking would be detrimental to the business.

Milton Rosado, representative for the United Auto Workers union which also represents casino dealers is opposed to the delay in the smoking ban. He said that it is about the health and safety of the workers.
