Is Macau The New Capital of Gambling ?

Most people, when thinking about gambling and casinos, think about Las Vegas and Atlantic City. After all, they’ve been accustomed to think that the best, biggest, most attractive casinos are there. Nevertheless, it’s possible that only a few years from now that situation will change, as there might be an even bigger player in town – Macau. This special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China was administered by Portugal until 1999 and it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to China in 1999, who transformed into one of the biggest gambling areas in the world.

Ever since 1999 Macau has been growing and developing in a light-speed pace, with new casinos opening almost every month. In fact, with the opening of the Sands Macau, the largest casino in the world, in 2004, gambling revenues from Macau's casinos were for the first time greater than those of Las Vegas Strip, surpassing the 6 billion dollars mark. More and more tourists and gamblers are coming to this area each year and that trend is only expected to continue with the opening of Macau’s Cotai Strip, which will include more than 19,000 guest rooms throughout seven hotels.

When thinking about it, it’s really amazing what this region has been through in the last 7-8 years, which leads us to the clear conclusion that one day Macau will not only be the most profitable casino area in the industry, but also the gambling capital of the world. This change of thinking probably won’t come so fast, as most people still see Las Vegas as the true centre of gambling, but rest assured - it will come.
