Arizona happy to keep Indian Casinos as they are

Voting on this hotly contested issue was close and is still subject to change. Racetracks states side will not be given permission to operate slots, tribes will not be allowed to offer online casinos which would attract customers from all over the states. The State Legislature decided to throw this complex issue open to voting as they also do not seem to know which route to take. The two major opponents involved here were the tribal casinos and slot machines at the race tracks. Despite countless hearings, drafting and redrafting of bills, research and debate on the issues, it remains a prickly pear.

Only 20% of voters wanted slot machines at the racetracks but 79.9% were opposed. In the gambling industry the stakes are high and it is not a question of winner takes all. This issue will remain controversial. Special interest parties write initiative to benefit themselves and legislators have to introduce bills that will benefit their voters. The tribes will lose big should their casinos be axed and the state''s racetracks feel that slot machines are necessary for their survival. It is interesting to note that the racetracks were willing to be the sacrificial lamb by offering to pay 40% tax on their revenues in exchange for being allowed to operate slot machines, furthermore they were willing to let the Indian tribes be allowed to have up to 27 casinos. The face of casinos in Arizona is not changing much under the new laws except that there will now be more casinos with more slots and table games. The state will earn more money, the tribes operating casinos will make more money, it seems everyone is happy…..for the moment.
