European Online Casinos Turn To EU For Help

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) recently celebrated its first birthday, but rest assured that almost no one was really happy about it. Since its legislation, countless companies had to withdraw their online casino from the US market, losing millions of dollars and letting down thousands of customers. If that’s not enough, last May, the folks at Washington took another step in that direction and withdrew the country’s WTO commitment to allow foreign firms into its gambling market. Now, trying to fight back, several European online gambling firms are asking European Union trade chief Peter Mandelson to turn into congress and try to cancel the anti-online casino law, or at least get some sort of compensation.

Naotaka Matuskata, a senior policy advisor with U.S. law firm Alston & Bird, is currently representing UC Group, a British online payments’ processor company. According to him, the US is hardly trying to compensate any of the European companies, which is exactly why the European Union should intervene. Matuskata’s client is certainly not the only one trying to get compensation, as many of the leading online casino sites today, such as 888.com, Bwin and PartyGaming, are based in the EU and were damaged too during the last year

From the American point of view, the problem certainly doesn’t end with those companies and the European Union. Both Canadian and Japanese online casino companies have already demanded some kind of compensation too, which makes this whole deal much more complex. How will all of this end ? Apparently, only time will tell.
