Hawaii pushes for legalisation of online gaming

Discussions concerning the legalisation of online gaming have long plagued US authorities as more and more states take steps towards more liberal gambling legislation. The latest new development concerns Hawaii with legislators pushing harder than ever for greater gaming freedom. Though the state has a long history of opposition to such activity, the demands of the financial crisis and global economic downturn have meant that Hawaii is becoming increasingly anxious to generate additional revenue from tax. A decline in tourist numbers has meant that Hawaiians are finally turning to gambling in order to fix a billion dollar budget gap.

Opposition to the legislation is, however, fierce with opponents to the proposal speaking up loud and clear. Many are anxious to preserve Hawaii’s reputation as a friendly family holiday destination and regard gambling as a serious threat to its image. Others are concerned that the introduction of gaming freedom could lead to a host of social problems including gambling addiction and subsequent crime. The financial incentive is, they say, nothing compared with the serious implications of such legal change.

Current discussion now centres on the legal state of land casino gambling. Many regard this as the first step tpwards the eventual legalisation of online gaming. It remains to be seen whether the federal government will permit individual states to grant legal licenses to casinos. With so many competing interests at stake, it’s no wonder such a contentious debate continues to excite strong emotions and opinions. Whatever the outcome of the campaign, it is clear that all member of the gaming and Hawaiin community will be monitoring its progress very closely indeed.
