Online Casino Gambling in Europe – Where Does Each Country Stand?

The state of online casino gambling in Europe seems to be growing more and more complicated as time passes, to the point where now, each state has adopted an entirely different stance from one another and is tackling the situation from different angles.

It appears as though the Netherlands is following in the footsteps of the USA and its UIGEA, when last month it approached all Dutch banks and financial service companies in a plea to cease all business operations with the online casino industry. The spokeswoman for the Dutch Justice Ministry added that offering online casino services in the Netherlands would be considered illegal without government approval, yet even the state-owned monopoly, Holland casino’s request for permission was dismissed.

Germany currently remains undecided as to what stance it holds over online casino gambling. In a letter from Brussels, the country was demanded to list its views regarding the current online casino gambling laws in Europe, yet has asked for an extended deadline due to inconclusive views. The extension was granted until the 2nd of June 2008.

Denmark, on the other hand, concluded only a year ago in a District Court, that poker is a game of pure luck. Perhaps following fierce opposition by gamblers in the know, the Danish Secretary for taxes announced recently that the country will be repealing its monopoly over online casino gambling and attempt to regulate the market. As for gamblers, however, online casino winnings must be taxed in Denmark.

In France, regulation over online casino gambling remains highly strict, yet the country has announced plans to also regulate the market and even open its doors to foreign companies.
