Online Casino Sites Keep Fighting UIGEA

Many online casino sites have suffered a lot during this last year, especially because of the legislation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). As a reminder, this “anti-online gambling” law prohibited credit card companies and banks from making any financial transaction when online casinos were involved. While some sites just gave up, due to the fact that they pretty much lost the American market, others decided to fight back. Sportingbet, for example, a leading sportsbook site, lost almost 75% of its customers after the legislation of UIGEA, but did everything it can in order to survive. In fact, despite all the problems mentioned above, it managed to post an operating profit in the year to the end of July.

"Given the big changes and restructuring that we’re going through, I am pleased to report a strong increase in gross win and an impressive growth, especially in the European market” says Andrew McIver, group chief executive of Sportingbet. Unfortunately, in order to survive, the company had to fire more than 500 employees, 100 of them in Europe, or as McIver stated “We had no choice whatsoever”. In addition, the online casino company decided to transfer all its licensable activities to the Channel Islands and its staff to Dublin, Ireland.

Stories like this one can show us that even though the price that many online casino sites had to pay due to UIGEA was huge, they still found ways in order to keep doing business, and even stay profitable. For us, the players and customers of the online gambling industry, it should be more than encouraging, as it proves that online casinos are to stay.
