Bodog Applies for UK Online Casinos License

Bodog Entertainment has applied for a UK operating license, to potentially become one of the many UK online casinos to penetrate the European market. According to reports by the Guardian, although there are many small companies applying to become one of the UK online casinos, very few are of the size and success of Bodog.

The reason that UK online casinos and poker rooms are bypassing the regulatory scheme is the high 15 percent remote gaming tax that was imposed last year. Many of the companies are paying only a fraction of that amount due to operating with overseas tax havens.

Bodog is one of the major companies that are still accepting bets from United States players. This is achieved by operating with licences from sovereign governments, explains Bodog CEO Calvin Ayre: "We have licenses from sovereign governments to do what we do. That's how it works on every other industry on the planet."

Ayre also explained the company's conversion into one of the UK online casinos on his popular blog, saying "Bodog's expansion into Europe is an exciting step for the company. Not only does it make sense from a business perspective, but it feels right on a personal level as well. My roots are in the United Kingdom; my grandparents hailed from Scotland and England, and I feel a lot of connection to the UK."
