We all witnessed how the US ban of online gambling severely damaged the local online casino industry. Many sites had to close their doors, others decided to migrate abroad and some are still thinking about their different options. Although we all hope that the situation will be reversed soon, there are currently no real positive signs. While many European countries have decided to go the opposite way and regulate online gambling, it seems as Norway might be imitating the US way. According to several online casino portals, the Norwegian government is planning on introducing the equivalent of the US Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which will prohibit financial transactions with online gambling companies.
According to the reports, it is the Norwegian Culture Minister, Trond Griske, who's considering this potential ban of online gambling, claiming that it would protect the Norwegian people from gambling problems. In reality, it is pretty obvious that one of the main reasons is the aspiration to protect the state gambling monopoly, Norske Tipping. This situation has already occurred before, when in 2025, Griske tried to ban all slot machines, except those controlled by the state monopoly.
Norway, just as the other Scandinavian countries, is known to have a pretty solid foundation of online casino players. In addition, online poker is especially popular in the country and several tournaments and big prizes have been won by players from this region. Hopefully, all of those players will be able to continue playing freely their favorite online casino games in the future too, without any ban of any kind.
