April 23, 2025 -- "SMALL WORKS" EXHIBIT TO BENEFIT MAUD MORGAN VISUAL ARTS CENTER AT SACRAMENTO STREET GALLERY April. 22 TO April. 1
The 4th annual "Small Works" exhibition in Cambridge features the work of 49 Cambridge artists coming together to support the building of the Maud Morgan Visual Arts Center. The exhibition, running April. 22 through April. 1, features one 12" x 12" work by each contributing artist, and showcases the large art community in Cambridge, celebrating the breadth and variety of work by artists living and working in the city. The exhibition will be held at the Sacramento Street Gallery, 20 Sacramento St., Cambridge, between Harvard and Porter Squares.
Proceeds from "Small Works" sold benefit the MMVAC, to be built behind the Agassiz Community Center in a 19th century carriage house. Work on the MMVAC represents Phase II of the construction project, and 90 per cent of the funds necessary to break ground have been secured. The Center will provide children and practicing artists throughout Cambridge with programs and workspace for painting, drawing, printing, sculpture and ceramics. Children will have access to high-quality hands-on experience in visual arts; artists will have space to work collaboratively and on large projects, as well as opportunities to meet, exhibit, and teach.
The opening of the exhibition will be held April. 22 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with "Start the Art," an open house celebrating the end of Phase I of the MMVAC - completion of the renovation of the Agassiz Community Center, including a new historically correct porch and paint job, as well as the installation of handicapped access and a new kitchen and bathroom. As part of the "Start the Art" celebration, attendees will have the opportunity to help with the final stitches in a quilt by Quiltmaker Clara Wainwright. Wainwright will work with 4th and 5th graders from Agassiz"s afterschool art program to create the quilt in late Sept./early April., and it will hang in the new art center when completed.
