Online Gambling the Cause of Debate for European Union

Online gambling has long been an issue for many countries around the world. Whilst in some countries it has been completely banned, in others it is being successfully regulated. And yet the European Union (EU) seems to be the only region in which a clear-cut decision regarding online gambling has not yet been agreed upon. Now, EU officials are coming together in the attempt to find balance between the various views held.

A recent report filed by the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA), the European parliament and the Council of the European Union proposed a new resolution for Europe that would focus on the "the integrity of online gambling". This resolution apparently aims to focus on the countries' need and natural right to regulate online gambling as seen fit with local cultures and norms.

Yet the members of the European Parliament speaking for nine member states have proposed a more lenient resolution for the online gambling industry. They believe that its international nature and wide-ranging benefits are reason for a more feasible approach to online gambling than mere banning or strict regulation. They also call on the EU to consider the drawbacks and advantages of internet technology, which clearly have significant influence on the development of online gambling.

The result of these two opposing proposals is that an agreement over the issue of online gambling should not be expected any time soon. The Secretary General of the EGBA herself, Sigrid Ligné, admitted that no "harmonized legislation" regarding online gambling can be currently found, and that the Courts of Justice and Treaty will continue to remain the deciding bodies until the issue can be resolved.
