The latest proposal of Congressman Barney Frank, titled Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act, is already creating waves around the online casino industry. As expected, those who support UIGEA are against it, but those who critic the online gambling ban are supporting Frank's new proposal. Not surprisingly, the 400,000 members of the Poker Players' Alliance (PPA) are among those supporters, as they stated in a recent press release. "Congressman Frank's bill is a common sense approach to Internet gambling," said Senator Alfonse D'Amato, PPA Chairman of the Board. "We think that regulation is the right way to go in this case" he added.
Congressman Frank's plan is to define a set of criteria by which banks and other financial institutions will be allowed to process funds to and from online casino sites that meet strict licensing and regulations. Such criteria will include an age verification software and a program for helping people with gambling problems. Eventually, only those well regulated sites will exist, making the whole online gambling industry much cleaner and safer.
As a reminder, the Poker Players' Alliance is a nonprofit membership organization comprised of poker players and enthusiasts from around the United States who have joined together to speak with one voice to promote the game, ensure its integrity and protect poker players' rights. The organization doesn't see in poker a gambling game, or as defined best by Chairman D'Amato: "Americans have played poker throughout history. Playing poker at an online casino is simply an example of an American tradition evolving into the 21st century and it certainly shouldn't be banned"
