The Japan Open is the latest backgammon tournament to hit the online gambling world, and the intense qualifying rounds have only just been completed. Online qualifiers were held on April 5th and April 12th, and offered winning players entry into the offline backgammon tourney scheduled for the 20th to the 22nd of April. The player response was simply immense.
The online qualifiers were held via the brand new online backgammon network by Jadestone, which is currently working in cooperation with the World Series of Backgammon (WSOB), the Japan Open's official tournament sponsor. According to the Director of Jadestone's UK division, Andrew Pegler, it is clear that backgammon is already one of the most popular games. He believes that Jadestone is expanding its foundations in Japan by partnering up with the WSOB, and also by being the home to the Backgammon World Champion, Mochy Mochizuki, who plays exclusively for the website.
Similarly, the Managing Director for the WSOB, Andy Bell, has explained that interest in online Backgammon has been significantly apparent following the qualifying success for the Cannes stop of the WSOB in late April. There has since been an increase in the amount of hopeful qualifiers for the London and Prague events soon to take place, and the Backgammon product offered by Jadestone will be proven even more flexible with the Japan Open now also a part of the repertoire. Bell stated that he and everyone else at the WSOB are proud to be working in cooperation with Jadestone and sponsoring the much anticipated Japan Open. Backgammon is no doubt taking off in new and unprecedented ways, and the whole online industry is taking notice!
